Enrolments Growing for a Senior School Start at Flinders

Enrolments are growing for Senior School at Matthew Flinders Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast with students wanting to make the most of their final years of schooling

Mrs Anita Gibson, the Head of Secondary School, said more families were joining the Flinders Senior School in Year 10 and Year 11 to provide their children with a vibrant and caring environment that鈥檚 switched on for learning.

"Students who join us for Senior School are focused on their academic goals, and so it's incredibly rewarding to see them grow and flourish in a short period of time at the College," Mrs Gibson said.

"We also pride ourselves on nurturing strong teacher-student relationships, and our students appreciate this positive culture for learning through their senior schooling journey.

"The College鈥檚 extensive co-curricular program is also a major drawcard for many students wanting to strengthen their talents, try new hobbies and build friendships across sport, music, the dramatic arts and service learning."

This year, the College introduced a dedicated study precinct for its senior students, with specialist support from the Head of Studies and Head of Senior School, as well as teachers and pastoral care staff.

"The aim is to support our students' wellbeing by preparing them for the demands of senior schooling and building skills to 'leave well' as they embrace an exciting life beyond the school gates.

"We also guide students through the intricacies of the QCAA system and help them to prepare for mock exams, senior assessments and external examinations, so they can achieve their academic potential in Year 12.鈥澨

The College is hosting a free community information session for families who are considering the move during the senior schooling years. Bookings are open now for 鈥楳aking the Most of Senior School鈥 on Thursday, 9 May from 6:00pm-7:30pm.

Student Reflections: Why Join Flinders for Senior School?

We asked two students to share their experience of joining Flinders in Year 10 for the start of their senior schooling journey.

Andy, a Year 12 Prefect and House Captain, joined Flinders in 2022 as part of the Year 10 intake.

He describes the transition to Senior School at Flinders as 鈥渆asy鈥.

鈥淚 was drawn to Flinders by the amazing co-curricular opportunities, and the studies have been a bonus,鈥 Andy said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a real drive here for students to achieve their best possible ATAR, so that鈥檚 been great.鈥

One of Andy's Senior School highlights has been the rugby boarding exchange he experienced at one of Flinders鈥 partner schools in Devon, England in Year 10 for one school term.

He also enjoys playing tuba in two College bands and participating in a range of sports teams across rugby, touch football, athletics, netball and volleyball.

Andy鈥檚 father, Michael, agrees the move to Flinders has been a positive one.

鈥淏efore Andy commenced, he spent a couple of days at the end of Year 9 at Flinders for orientation. From then on it was like he鈥檇 been there for years!鈥 Michael said. 鈥淭he staff are all genuine and approachable, which made the transition almost seamless,鈥 he said.

鈥淎ndy was welcomed into the music and rugby programs where he has thrived to be the person and leader he is now in Year 12. This welcome also included my wife, Beck, and I, as we were always provided with feedback on how Andy was going, which was comforting.鈥

Tamsin, a Year 12 Prefect and Dance Captain, also joined the College in 2022 with the Year 10 intake.

Tamsin has grown academically and explored her passion for dance and netball. She also contributes to community service projects and fundraising campaigns.

鈥淚 instantly felt a sense of community within the Flinders Senior School,鈥 Tamsin said. 鈥淭he teachers are dedicated and passionate, and I received a warm welcome from my peers.

鈥淎s my studies have intensified in Year 12, my teachers have supported me every step of the way. I often take part in additional studies after school where teachers assist me with any questions I might have.

鈥淎nd I have been lucky enough to continue my passion for dance within Flinders. As Dance Captain this year, I have enjoyed seeing Flinders dancers develop into a strong team. We鈥檙e looking forward to our upcoming competitions.

鈥淚 am so excited to continue my final year with Flinders and the many experiences that will set me in good stead for life beyond school.鈥
